During the 1960's, we experienced a movement toward consolidation of small schools in an effort to improve construction and operating economies, reduce administrative staff, and offer more comprehensive educational programs. Those reasons for larger, comprehensive schools still exist today; however, now that we have made this transition, some disadvantages of larger schools have become apparent and the potential advantages of the smaller schools are now being revisited. This report looks at two major trends and analyzes them for safer transportation methods. They are smaller schools foster improved academic performance, and the recent trend towards Smart Growth, New Urbanism, and Walkable Communities.

KidsWalk-to-School is a program that aims to get children to walk and bicycle to and from school in groups accompanied by adults. This gives kids a chance to be more physically active, to practice safe pedestrian skills, and to learn more about their environment. At the same time, KidsWalk-to-School encourages people to change their neighborhoods for the better, working together, to make walking a safe and enjoyable part of everyone's lives.
